Summer Adventure #11: Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Lake of the Clouds at sunset

It seems to me that it is easy to daydream about vacations in far off places, while overlooking local opportunities for adventure. Did you know we have one of the largest designated wilderness areas in the entire Midwest right here at the base of the Keweenaw? Yet many locals have only visited the Lake of the Clouds, while never exploring more of the Porcupine Mountains. While there are plenty of difficult trails only suitable for avid hikers (and if that’s you, you probably don’t need to read this blog!), there are a good handful of easier hikes, campgrounds (both modern and rustic), a visitor center, and of course, easy access to beautiful views of Lake of the Clouds. If you are interested in trying out overnight backpacking, this is a great destination. There are backcountry yurts and cabins available for rent, so you don’t need to deal with carrying and setting up a tent. Don’t miss this local gem–check out the following websites (and the visitor center) for more info, directions, and help choosing your hikes, whether you make this a day trip or a vacation!
