Meet the Staff: Catherine

Kaleidoscope Hancock has a fun new art teacher! Read on to learn more about her!

Name:
Catherine Hiltunen
Community where you live:
Hancock — I own the Magic Kiln and we live above the studio.
What do you teach at Kaleidoscope/What is your job at Kaleidoscope?
I teach Explore the Arts 1 & 2 at our Hancock location. We get to try out lots of different art mediums and explore creative opportunities in our community.
Who’s in your family? Any pets?
I have two teenage children. Alli is 19 and goes to Michigan Tech. Bryce is 17 and is a senior in high school. No pets right now, but we love animals!
What was your favorite topic to learn about when you were young?
My favorite was art class.
What is your favorite topic to learn about now?
I’ve been experimenting with cooking & baking. My daughter and I love to try new foods and recipes.
What project are you working on now that you are proud of?
I love painting ceramic projects in my studio. Right now I’m working on some Christmas presents for family members. (Shhhh, it’s a surprise!)
Do you have a favorite color? Which one?
It’s so hard to pick just one! I usually prefer cooler colors (blue, green, purple, gray), but then I’ll see a sunset and fall in love with orange. Right now I’ll say periwinkle, which is a lavender blue color.
What’s your favorite thing about teaching?
I love getting to know the different personalities of each student and seeing that spark in their eyes when they enjoy a lesson.
If you could go to any place in the world, where would you go and what would you do?
I’ve always wanted to go to Australia. I’d like to tour the outback and see the animals in their natural environment.
What’s your favorite food?
I love exploring new flavors. Right now my favorite is Gochujang Peanut Noodles – a little spicy, a little sweet, and the peanuts give it a great salty crunch.
Thanks for sharing about yourself, Catherine, and for being a part of the Kaleidoscope team!
