At Kaleidoscope, we explore the arts, nature, athletics, and culture in the Keweenaw. In this blog post, we take a look at what’s been going on in our Nature and STEAM-related classes and electives. Enjoy the photos and click through to the class descriptions for more details.
Explore Isle Royale
From the first steps of trip planning to sleeping in your tent on the shores of Lake Superior, this class guides you through the experience of backpacking the beautiful, remote, rocky, forested island that is Isle Royale National Park. Our first Kaleidoscope trip to Isle Royale took place in the summer of 2022. The next trip will take place in the summer of 2024 after students meet monthly throughout the 2023/2024 school year in preparation for the expedition.
Lego Robotics – Hancock *** Explore Lego Robotics – L’Anse
Tinker Lab- Hancock *** Tinker Lab – L’Anse
Tinker Lab is available at both Kaleidoscope locations! Students do experiments and other STEAM-related activities. Check out the photos from our recent “elephant toothpaste” experiment.
Nature and STEAM – Virtual Electives
Take a peek into our online world of learning with a snippet from a lesson in each of these virtual electives.
Nature
In Nature C (Ages 13+), students learned to identify animal tracks and sign.
Today you’re going to make observations while on the move. You may need to plan ahead for this assignment so that you can be outdoors in a natural area or on a nature trail.
Review the attached resource about animal tracks. Try to find photos of animal tracks that you might see in the Keweenaw, such as deer, rabbits, or squirrels.
Visit NatureTracking.com to give it a try.
STEAM
This STEAM A (ages 5-8) lesson explored the art and science of snowflakes.
You’re going to cut a paper snowflake and use salt to make sparkly salt crystals on top of the snowflake!
Click the photo of the snowflake to visit the directions and make your own!
