Position Title: Virtual Instructor

Kaleidoscope: Keweenaw Alternative Education Organization seeks virtual instructors for the 2021/2022 school year. Responsibilities include developing curriculum and engaging with K-12 students weekly on a virtual, non-live platform. Experience with children and a passion for your subject area are a must!

Hours are flexible and could range from 2-8 hours per week.

Base pay begins at $18 per hour, with potential increases based on education and experience.

  • Health

  • Ice Skating

  • Performing Arts

  • Skiing

  • Sports Sampler



  • Degree or work towards a degree in education, or related experience.

  • Familiarity with communication using virtual platforms.

  • Experience in the subject(s) you would like to teach.

What is Kaleidoscope: Keweenaw Alternative Education Organization?

Kaleidoscope is a nonprofit organization formed in 2019 whose mission is to provide learning experiences and support for Keweenaw families to further their educational pursuits. We work with community partners to offer classes to homeschool, traditional, and non-traditional students. Some classes take place at our center in L’Anse, MI, while others are created by families following Kaleidoscope guidelines, and consist of a combination of at-home, community-based, and virtual educational activities.

Job Description Summary

Kaleidoscope is a growing organization looking to foster new relationships and diversify our funding stream. We are looking for a highly qualified individual to represent Kaleidoscope in the community and oversee the operations of Kaleidoscope. Our ideal candidate is a flexible, open-minded, creative, and fiscally responsible individual with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned as needed)

  • Work with the Board of Directors to diversify funding streams, such as identifying potential new partners and grant opportunities

  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop and adapt Kaleidoscope’s institutional and operational policies

  • Hire and manage employees, including conducting annual performance reviews

  • Work with an accountant to manage Kaleidoscope’s finances

  • Create and maintain annual budgets

  • Communicate and attend meetings with the Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw (CLK) School District

  • Oversee completion of state documentation requirements 

  • Attend and prepare reports for board meetings

  • Coordinate special community events


Required Education

A minimum of a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience

  • At least 3-5 years of professional experience 

  • At least 3-5 years of experience managing employees and projects

  • At least 1 year of professional experience working with a range of stakeholders and partners

  • Experience using personal computers and basic software packages, including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, accounting, and database software


Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Prior nonprofit experience

  • Prior experience or knowledge of homeschooling and/or alternative education

  • Prior experience of researching, writing, and managing grants

  • Degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Education, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and effectively across cultural boundaries and to work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, families, and the Kaleidoscope Board of Directors

  • Demonstrated commitment to developing and contributing to a safe, respectful, and inclusive work and learning environment

  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and written/oral communication skills

  • Experience with creating and managing budgets

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative to solve problems

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work assignments independently in a complex work environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy and attention to detail, including knowledge of proper grammar, spelling and punctuation

  • Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with highly confidential information

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

  • Demonstrated ability to meet and manage deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new computer skills

  • Proficiency with Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Forms

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Familiarity with, and comfort working with, homeschooling and alternative education communities

  • Experience building community outreach programs and working with community partners

  • Experience with processing payroll

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks and Airtable

  • Experience with State of MI nonprofit reporting and tax requirements

  • Experience with State of MI and CLK School District educational requirements

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is flexible. There is no defined office setting. However, you will need to attend meetings in Calumet with the CLK School District and visit the Kaleidoscope Center in L’Anse, MI as needed.

All classes in the program, the traditional school, K12 and Upper Peninsula Virtual Academy are available to all students enrolled with The Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium & Keweenaw.
