Explore Isle Royale

From the first steps of trip planning to sleeping in your tent on the shores of Lake Superior, this class guides you through the experience of backpacking the beautiful, remote, rocky, forested island that is Isle Royale National Park. We will meet monthly to practice packing, preparing camp meals, setting up a tent, and using camping gear. The class culminates in a summer 2024 four-night backpacking and camping trip to Isle Royale.

Carrie Dlutkowski is Kaleidoscope’s Explore Isle Royale instructor. Carrie grew up and continues to live in the Keweenaw Peninsula, outside of Houghton. She was homeschooled throughout her childhood, and time spent in nature was a formative part of her upbringing. Her family lives on forested land protected by a conservation easement which her parents designed. Carrie grew up playing in the woods around her home, as well as camping, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, and snowshoeing with her family.

Carrie has worked as a park ranger at Grand Portage National Monument in northern Minnesota. She is also a musician and music instructor.

Carrie first visited Isle Royale National Park when she was nine years old. Since then, she has sea kayaked, camped on the island, and backpacked the forty-mile length of the park. Carrie is very excited to lead the 2024 Explore Isle Royale class and help young people experience this special place.
